When we refuse to grieve and desire more, we are blind to the effects of sin.

—Dan B. Allender and Tremper Longman III, Intimate Allies

Rightly understood, I don't think this is intended as a license for self-absorbed whining and wallowing (regrettably, I've seen people abuse this truth in that manner—their lives are small and it makes me sad). It's a call to dignity, to being unafraid to confront the realities of this broken world with the transforming grace of the risen and reigning Christ. Indeed, the Church is responsible to lament what the rest of the world is ready to ignore—more than that, to hope, and more than that, to change. Doing any one of these things is unremarkable; doing all of them is only possible by the power of the Holy Spirit. That's what citizens of the Kingdom do. God help us when we want to settle for less.

So glad you posted this today.
I'm glad it connected with someone beyond me.
Thanks for that quote, I needed it. I've been feeling bad about being too self-absorbed to see God's bigger plans in the Kingdom but it's good to know that our small griefs and desires are still necessary in some ways.
