Not I, but He

We shall never find happiness by looking at our prayers, our doings, or our feelings; it is what Jesus is, not what we are, that gives rest to the soul. If we would at once overcome Satan and have peace with God, it must be by "looking unto Jesus."

Charles Haddon Spurgeon, Morning and Evening (29 June, Morning: "From Self to Jesus")

This morning's devotion is the very essence of the gospel in all its beauty, freedom, and glory. If you find yourself struggling with what the gospel means, this is likely what you're missing.

Not I, but He. Not my goodness, but His righteousness in my place, justifying me completely and reconciling me to the Father. Not my obedience, but His steady wooing of me into the reality of His authority over the universe. Not my achievement, but His victory over the powers of evil, darkness, and death that frees me to risk and live life to the full in Him. Not my self-improvement, but His work of sanctification in my life, making me holy by the power of His Spirit. Not my life, but the hope of His resurrection. Not my fickle love, but His undying love that died for love. For love of the world. For love of me.

Not I, but He, and none but He.
