She greets me early
with a smile that knows
nothing of me.
She calls me by name,
which is not my name
(she can only read
from the ticket).

"Has your luggage been
out of your control
since you packed it?"

"Ma'am," I tell her,
"I don't think
anything has been
in my control
for quite some time."

"Has anyone
unknown to you
given you anything
to carry on
this flight?"

"Ma'am," I reply,
"Even I am
unknown to me
today. So how can I
answer you?"

"Sir," she tells me,
"I need
a yes or no answer
to these questions."

"I know," I say,
"That's what I
used to think.
But so far,
I haven't found one."

She wouldn't let me
board the plane that day
because I told the truth.

She was probably
right.
